Structure, Function and Care of Human Skin

May 1st, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Danny Siegenthaler The human skin consists of two major structures: * Epidermis * Dermis The Epidermis The Epidermis is further subdivided into 5 Layers (from deepest to most superficial layer): * Stratum basale * Stratum spinosum * Stratum granulosum * Stratum lucidum * Stratum corneum The Stratum basale (also called Stratum germinativum): This is the deepest layer of the epidermis and it is here that new cells are generated for the renewal of the epidermal layers of the skin. A process of cell division referred to as mitotic division is responsible for the generation of the new epidermal skin cells. After the mitotic division (cell division leading to the formation of a new cell) a newly formed cell will undergo a progressive maturation called keratinisation as it migrates to the surface of the skin (1). The Stratum spinosum: The cells that divide in the stratum germinativum soon begin to accumulate many desmosomes (structures that join adjacent cells together) on their outer surface (1). The Stratum granulosum: As keratinocyes (these are the basic cell of which the epidermis is composed) progressively mature they accumulate a protein called keratin (this process is called keratinisation). In addition, the cells of the stratum granulosum accumulate dense basophilic keratohyalin granules (Granules found in living cells of keratinizing epithelia) (1). The Stratum lucidum: This is the second layer of the epidermis and varies in thickness throughout the body depending mainly on frictional forces and is thickest on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (1). The Stratum corneum: This layer consists of primarily dead skin cells. As a cell accumulates keratinohyalin granules, it is thought that rupture of lysosomal membranes (membrane covering lysosomal enzymes) release lysosomal enzymes (Lysosomal enzymes are those enzymes which are responsible for breaking down complex chemicals within a cell which have expended their useful life) that eventually cause cell death (5). The dead and dying cells filled with mature keratin form the stratum corneum . Skin Renewal Process In the Epidermis The epidermis is composed of stratified squamous epithelium (cells) and contains four principal types of cells. About 90% of the epidermal cells are keratinocytes (i.e.: cells with finger-like or ‘horny’ projections). They produce the protein keratin. Keratin helps waterproof and protect the skin and underlying tissues (2). Keratinocytes in the stratum basale of the epidermis can undergo mitosis (cell division). The formation of new cells in this basal layer gradually pushes previously formed cells upward through the stratum spinosum. As keratinocytes approach the surface of the epidermis, they accumulate intracellular keratin and secrete a waxy material into the intercellular space; these changes are visible in the stratum granulosum, a distinctive layer which is diagnostic for a keratinized epithelium. As maturing keratinocytes seal off the intercellular spaces through which they receive nutrients, they eventually die and form the stratum corneum, a tough and relatively impermeable layer of hardened, dead cells. Eventually, as cells reach the surface, they are sloughed off. The entire epidermis above the basal layer is replenished (replaced by new cells) within about two weeks (3). Epidermal cells There are several cells that make up the epidermis. Although the keratinocytes are by far the most common, they are just one of the cells found in the epidermis. Others include: Melanocytes: The main function of melanocytes is to produce melanin, which is responsible for the colour of our skin (4). Langerhans Cells arise from bone marrow and migrate to the epidermis. Langerhans cells interact with white blood cells called helper T cells in immune responses and are easily damaged by UV radiation (2). Merkel Cells: Merkel cells are located in the deepest layer (stratum basale) of the epidermis of hairless skin, where they are attached to keratinocytes by desmosomes. Merkel cells make contact with the flattened portion of the ending of a sensory neuron (nerve cell), called a tactile (Merkel) disc, and are thought to function in the sensation of touch (2). Dermo-epidermal Junction The Epidermis and Dermis are separated by the Dermo-Epithelial Junction. This junction holds the epidermis and dermis together and this is achieved by various fibers including collagen and desmosomes. This prevents the two layers becoming separated in areas of high shearing stress such as fingertips, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The Dermis The Dermis consists of two sub-layers: * The Papillary dermis and * The Reticular dermis The Papillary dermis (sub-epithelial layer) includes areolar connective tissue, dermal papillae (finger like projections that increase the surface area) and ridges that extend into the epidermis. These nipple-shaped structures protrude into the epidermis, and many contain loops of capillaries (very small blood vessels). Dermal papillae cause ridges in the overlying epidermis. It is these ridges that leave fingerprints on objects that are handled (2). The Reticular dermis consists of dense, irregular connective tissue containing interlacing bundles of collagen and coarse elastic fibers. Within the reticular region, bundles of collagen fibers interlace in a netlike manner. A small quantity of adipose tissue, hair follicles, nerves, oil glands, and the ducts of sweat glands occupy spaces between the fibers. Varying thicknesses of the reticular region contribute to differences in the thickness of skin. The combination of collagen and elastic fibers in the reticular region provides the skin with strength, extensibility, and elasticity. The Hypodermis The reticular region is attached to underlying organs, such as bone and muscle, by the subcutaneous layer, also called the hypodermis or superficial fascia. The subcutaneous layer also contains nerve endings called lamellated or Pacinian (pa-SIN-e-an) corpuscles that are sensitive to pressure. Nerve endings sensitive to cold are found in and just below the dermis, while those sensitive to heat are located in the middle and outer dermis (2). Skin Care of the Epidermis, Dermo-Epithelium, Dermis and Hypodermis Exfoliation Exfoliation of the skin affects the epidermis. The primary function of exfoliation is to: a) Remove dead skin cells b) Promote new skin cell growth c) Promote blood circulation Exfoliating the skin’s surface is an important step in the maintenance of healthy, vibrant looking skin. Products such as the Skin Renewal Gel, from Wildcrafted Herbal Products, utilises natural ingredients that gently remove the dead skin cells and nourish underlying layers. Keeping dead skin cells to a minimum, allows the skin to be able to breath better, absorb nutrients from moisturisers more easily and reduces the risk of infections such as Ring Worm and other pathogens. In addition, removal of dead skin cells will reduce the potential for sweat glands to become blocked thus reducing white heads, blackheads and acne. Cleansing Following exfoliation, cleansing will remove more deep seated dirt and help free pores of possible obstruction from the stale, natural skin oils and environmental particles that become lodged in the skin’s folds, wrinkles and pores. Toning Once the dead skin cells have been removed and the skin cleaned it is important to prevent pores from remaining open. Toning, utilises skin care products that contain astringent ingredients which will close opened pores and prevent particles from entering the pores while they are wide open. Natural skin care products should be used at all times, as there is increasing evidence suggesting that some non-natural skin care products contain ingredients that may be harmful to your health, as they are absorbed by your skin into the blood stream. Natural skin care products such as moisturisers and masks target the Dermo-epithelium, Dermis and Hypodermis. Moisturisers Moisturisers penetrate the epidermis as they are absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin and the nutrients from the herbal extracts and essential oils in these moisturisers have the ability to promote cell growth and collagen production. Moisturisers are an important final step in your daily skin care regime. They moisturise and help protect your skin, they hydrate your skin and nourish the cells and other structures outlined above, thus helping in maintaining the health of your skin. Clay masks Once or twice a week, a deep cleansing mask should be used on your facial skin and neck. These masks not only help to deeply cleanse your skin, but provide important nutrients to the tissues of your skin and help to remove dead skin cells from your skins surface. Phentermine - Shed your Extra Pounds

April 28th, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Gelsey Simmons Weight loss is the primary focus when you find yourselves overweight standing on your bathroom scales. But health experts say, Dont go by the weighing machine because what matters is your Body mass index (BMI) which is a way of relating your weight to your height. An ideal BMI is taken to be 20 and 25 and if your obesity count is more than 30 you are diagnosed with obesity. Being overweight is not a disease, but obesity is. Being seriously overweight or obese not only puts strain on your body by making your joints in your knees and hips prone to osteoarthritis, but you may find yourself short of breath when making anything but the slightest physical exertion. Excess weight or obesity is also a factor in triggering diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart diseases and strokes. In cases of morbid obesity where the BMI count is more than 40 the doctor recommends oral weight loss medications to protect the patient from life-threatening diseases accompanying obesity. The most popular and effective among diet pills available in the market is Phentermine. It is an appetite suppressant and is used in the short term treatment of obesity. Phentermine is an “anorectic” or “anorexigenic” drug which works by stimulating the central nervous system, which causes the heart rate and blood pressure to rise and in doing so decreases appetite. Phentermine should only be administered as a prescription medication to assist with the battle of obesity but it should not be used for “cosmetic” weight loss. That is, Phentermine should not be used only to improve appearance. Phentermine is not recommended for use by people who are only mildly overweight unless they have health problems that are made worse by their weight. The use of appetite suppressant drugs is rather popular because they seem to achieve very fast short term weight reductions. But to lose and maintain weight successfully over the long term, Phentermine should be combined with a healthy lifestyle including physical activity and improved diet. Along with Phentermine online information, you can and also seek free consultations from experts over the web. You can also buy Phentermine from online pharmacies with just the click of a mouse and from the comforts of your home. Moreover, cheap Phentermine is made available by many online pharmacies at very competitive prices but you must be wary of not being lured by unscrupulous drug suppliers. To cope up with the epidemic of weight-related problems like obesity the weight loss industry all over the world is growing by the day. Focus on weight loss can not only harm your metabolism but also your wallet and your confidence. The most effective weight loss theory of all times is a balanced diet with caloric restriction and a regular exercise schedule. But you must adhere to a diet plan only considering your individual metabolism preferably on consultation with a dietician. Therefore you must always consult your physician before considering any form of treatment for obesity and related diseases. Planting a Garden Pond

April 25th, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Philip Swindells Waterlilies and other aquatic plants can be planted successfully at any time from early spring into the summer. It is preferable to plant in early spring as then it is possible to achieve a good display during the succeeding summer. Aquatics planted during the summer rarely achieve full maturity until the following year. All aquatic plants enjoy a heavy soil, so use a clay-loam soil from the garden or a proper formulated aquatic planting compost. When collecting soil from the garden, ensure that it is weed-free and does not contain any other organic debris that may decompose and pollute the water. It should not be from land that has been recently dressed with artificial fertilizer as this is likely to be very soluble and leach out into the pond water, thereby providing ideal conditions for the establishment of green water discoloring algae. Waterlilies and other aquatic plants should always be fed using a slow release aquatic plant fertilizer in either a tablet or sachet, which during the growing season can be pushed into the compost next to the plant. Plant waterlilies and marginal aquatics in the same manner as when potting other plants into pots, but ideally use proper aquatic planting baskets. Although marginal plants will grow in traditional pots, they will not prosper in the same way as when cultivated in planting baskets. Always plant a single species or variety in one container. Never consider mixed plantings as these will end in a tangle with one species or variety almost certain to dominate. Once planted, top-dress the compost in the baskets with fine gravel to prevent fish from stirring up the compost in their search for aquatic insect larvae. Submerged aquatics are planted in a similar fashion, except that many more are used in a container. The larger sized planting basket will accommodate ten or twelve bunches, for most submerged aquatic plants are sold as bunches of leafy cuttings fastened together with a lead strip. Be sure to bury the fastening in the compost when planting. If left above the surface of the soil, the lead rots through the stems of the cuttings. These then detach and come floating to the surface of the water. Top-dress the planted baskets with well-washed fine gravel. Philip Swindells has over 40 years gardening experience. A former botanical garden curator and an international horticultural consultant, he has worked extensively in the UK, North America, the Middle East and Australia. Troubled Relationships, Seven Signs For Relationships Problems And Their Solutions

April 22nd, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Nili Sachs, Ph.D In the best of intimate relationships, there are those subtle and not so subtle waves of difficulties. Some disagreements make sense; his words against hers, her values in the face of his values, old traditions vs. new ideas and so on. However, over few years living with a partner, attempting and working on intimacy, you could see few patterns emerging. Those patterns might be complicated for you to detect when you are a part of the drama. For me, after thirty years of marriage-therapy and relationship-coaching, I find them simple to detect. Solving relationships problems take commitment, education and good will. From here the solutions are pretty much straightforward. Some of these patterns are signs of troubled relationships. Here is the list of the seven most damaging intimate relationships troubles and their solutions: 1. Inability to be emotionally open; the uniqueness and secret of intimate relationships in comparison to other social, workplace and family relationships is in staying emotionally open. By exercising daily confession with each other, couples learn to become emotionally open towards each other. 2. Lack of physical closeness and sings of affection may starve the relationship. It is not easy to undo the pain, shame and hurts of the past. Learn to be affectionate. Do it for the sake of this relationship. 3. Not paying attention while listening: you might be listening to each other, even giving the right cues as in ‘active listening’. But do you get the meaning of each others message without the attempt to ’solve’ the problem? Don’t solve each others’ problems. Share the gift of listening. Being heard is a treasure! 4. Difficulty articulating what you feel; many adults don’t know to express what they feel. Instead, you communicate what you think. Learning about emotions and their logic is valuable to every intimate relationship. Taking a risk to expose your accurate feelings in your relationship is a wise investment. As the relationship grows and thrives, that risk of exposure becomes safe. 5. Anger, fear, shame and other pains block the passages to feel tenderness, joy and love. Those painful emotions are not bad; they are information that should be shared so that your love will surface again. 6. Power struggles on sex, money, children, free time, relatives or friends are all signs of other issues surfacing in the relationships. Learn to decode these symptoms and see the meaning beneath the issues. 7. Contempt and its expressions are the ‘deadliest sin’ of all troubled relationships. This will take a bit longer to solve; I suggest treating this symptom deeper as in a root canal. Find the roots of those feelings of contempt or they’ll destroy your intimate relationship. It is challenging to get your intimate relationship out of trouble. The effort is worth it; as your intimate relationship is the most important investment of your time energy and endeavor. How would you like to improve, strengthen or even save, in some cases, your intimate relationship? Apollo, We Have A Problem

April 20th, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Guy Smith Funny how my mind works. When I read that Adobe was releasing an early version of their Apollo application platform, all I could think of was how the original Apollo of Mount Olympus fame spread a virus. The fact that Apollo killed a Python in Delphi only adds a multitude of unintentional software humor. From a technical standpoint, Apollo is interesting, though from a marketing standpoint it is of questionable survivability. Technically, Adobe is simply making web applications standalone desktop apps by localizing HTML, Flash, and other common web goodies into a self-contained, platform-agnostic system. Pretty slick approach given that people already developing web-based applications have low learning curves to create portable desktop apps. However, the application development heavens are an unforgiving place. The gods therein (Microsoft, Java, LAMP, etc.) are ill tempered and unlikely to yield followers. At this point in development theology, there are too many gods, mortals that are too devout, and few new disciples to whom evangelism will work. Rare is a development organization that can afford to change their technical base. Small shops cannot afford the learning curve to adopt new development languages, and large ones have implemented long-term platform strategies for which they are oath to abandon. However, change does happen. Not long ago Java was a toy, and yet it has become a dominant force in server-side and web based enterprise application and e-commerce development. Microsoft still holds the power on PCs as Windows still dominates the desktop. Thus Apollo will have to ride in the sky a long time before finding a landing place on technocrat terra firma. The base question can be summed up “Does the market need yet another development platform?” Granted, cross platform agility within a familiar framework and end user interface is compelling. But the switching cost is high, and the non-Windows installed base is small. Adobe may be laying an egg in hopes that the chickens will soon arrive. That however is a questionable strategy. This situation should be familiar to anyone in technology marketing. Adobe is faced with creating a following within a saturated market (the software development market is by quirky definition saturated from the start as anyone who wants to develop software must either know and love a programming language and platform, or they must careful pick one appropriate for their product). Adobe has several things going for them: * They are repackaging well known and well loved development tools that already have followings. * They have a compelling cross platform story for new projects. * Adobe is a well liked and trusted vendor (unlike the Evil Empire ). Yet they face significant barriers to entry: * High switching costs for most technology buyer genotypes. * Compelling competitive ROI for Open Source alternatives. * Innovative competitors like Brainwave who offer the same gestalt. * Fear of vendor lock-in amplified by Open Source alternatives. Adobe has few options in acquiring tractions aside from a market seeding campaign, and ploys to CTOs about extending their existing in-house expertise in web technologies to work on desktop solutions. If Apollo is to fly, it will have to whip the chariot horses hard and beware the jealousy of the other gods. Guy Smith is the chief consultant for Silicon Strategies . By Stewart Hare Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also known as Seasonal Depression and Winter Depression is an extreme form of common seasonal mood cycles of depression that is triggered by low natural light levels, this typically occurs in the winter months from November to March. It is thought to affect 5% of the population and a further 10% of the population can suffer from the lesser form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), known as sub-syndromal SAD. People whose profession needs then to work at night are extremely susceptible to suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Research is still looking in to the exact reasons why Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) occurs, the general belief is that the levels of the brain chemicals melatonin and serotonin react to low levels of light which causes the depressions. Typical symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are depression, feeling hopeless, lethargy, sadness, tearfulness, thoughts of suicide, sleepiness or excessive sleep, overeating, craving for carbohydrate and weight gain. These symptoms typically disappear in the spring and summer months. When these symptoms occur for three winters then Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is diagnosed. With milder form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), sub-syndromal SAD, the symptoms typically last between January and March. Exercise, spending time outdoors in natural light and a course of light therapy which includes being exposed to a bright light of over 2500 lux for two hours a day will help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Eating the right diet will also help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), do not eat fatty foods for breakfast or lunch, avoid fatty, salty, sugary snacks such as cakes, biscuits, pork pies, crisps, pizza, confectionaries, doughnuts, salami and pastries, avoid alcohol, salt and caffeine, eat plenty of fruit, legumes such as lentils, chick peas and kidney beans, whole grain bread and cereals such as brown rice, oats and pearl barley, nuts and seeds, roots vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and parsnips and also cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, drink plenty of mineral water and herbal tea. Sunless Tanning Salons Today

April 16th, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Ken Marlborough When the weather starts to warm up and the days get longer, we are all drawn outdoors to enjoy the sun. Many will recall seemingly endless hours outdoors, soaking up the sun’s rays without a care. Unfortunately, sunbathing isn’t as carefree an activity as it used to be. These days, there’s more to worry about, such as premature aging, scarring and blemishes, or even skin cancer. The sunless tanning salon is becoming more and more diversified. High-end salons and spas are starting to supplement their UV tanning services with sunless. Sessions can cost anywhere from $25 per session to up to $100 for a few one-hour sessions. When a person visits a sunless tanning salon, they have the option of using a spray booth or having a technician apply the tanner with an airbrush system. There are also the options of UV tanning via tanning beds and even application of tanning lotions by salon staff. The latter can cost up to $125 per session, and whether or not this service is available will depend on the salon. Many salons sell tanning lotions, mousses, bronzers, and other products in addition to their in-house services. The tanning spray used in a sunless tanning salon contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA reacts with dead skin cells on the surface of the body, causing them to turn brown. As dead skin peels off, the tan fades, just like with a natural suntan. Some sunless tanning salons add cosmetic bronzers to their formulas, which cause the effects of the tan to show up sooner, sometimes immediately. DHA without a bronzer added does not begin to show results for two to four hours after a session. A good sunless tanning salon will have knowledgeable, open staff that will explain procedures, precautions, and aftercare to clients. Follow-up care or maintenance is usually available in the form of repeat visits, touch ups, or advice on how to prolong the tan with products such as lotions. Sunless Tanning Info provides detailed information about sunless tanning lotion, booths, sprays, salons, and pills, as well as reviews of best sunless tanning products and methods. Match, Meet, and Mesmerize at a Job Fair

April 14th, 2008 by geoffreyrozen

By Mary Jeanne Vincent Are you considering another trip through the career maze? Attending a job fair can make you feel like you are playing a losing game unless you have a clear understanding of the rules. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of any job fair, and gaining a competitive edge. GET A JUMP ON YOUR COMPETITION * Review the list of participating companies and determine which companies interest you the most. Pick several. * Collect information about these companies and do your research before you attend the job fair. Check out their Web sites and look for information about them on the Internet. * Match your skills to the companies needs and job requirements. * Practice your fifteen-second introduction. Be sure to include your name, your key skills, and what you can do for the company. * Review your accomplishments and be ready to talk about them. KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF * Approach the job fair as you would a job interview. * Dress appropriately and avoid wearing too much perfume or cologne. * Bring plenty of clean, error-free rsums on good quality paper. * Know what you are looking for. Be able to explain what you can do and what kind of position you want. Remember it is not the recruiters task to determine which job is right for you. * Relate what you know about the company and their products and services. * Link your skills and experience to what they need. If you visited their Web site, say so. * Enjoy the process; be positive and ready to talk about yourself. * Smile, shake hands, and introduce yourself. * Ask questions that demonstrate your interest. * Ask for the interviewers business card so you can follow up later. Make notes on the back of the card so you can remember what you discussed. DON’T SABOTAGE YOUR SUCCESS * Dont bring your children. * Dont try to baffle anyone with smooth talk. * Dont bring up any past history you have with the company or its recruiters. * Dont grab a handful of freebies. Take one. ESSENTIAL AND YET NOT SO OBVIOUS * Visit with the smaller, seemingly less successful employers. You could easily miss a dynamic, little-known company that is a perfect match. * Talk to other job seekers. Exchange information about possible employers. Dont miss out on this hot source of possible opportunities. CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION * Sort through the company business cards you collected. Prioritize them for following up. * Contact recruiters and hiring managers by telephone. After small job fairs, follow up within three days. After large job fairs, follow up within five days. Remind them of who you are, when you met, and what job or position you discussed. * Express interest in meeting with them and offer to send them another copy of your rsum if they cant locate yours immediately. * Follow up, follow up, and follow up yet again. By Christine Akiteng Imagine this, you walk into the room, and there he/she is: bearing serene, body at ease, motions are gentle, mellow and laid back. He/she raises his/her eyebrows seductively and gives you a wink from a distance. You walk up to him/her and say hi, and that voice with that alluring quality, says hi back. You cant take off your eyes from that mischievous twinkle in his/her eyes, and then he/she licks his/her lips and ah-lah-lah. Your heart is now thumping against your chest, your mind is racing at zee km/hr and as for your body, things are happening that you cant control This is the kind of energy that comes from men and women who are naturally intoxicating; the kind of energy that radiates a seductive aura of mystery, tranquility, adventure and excitement. The kind of energy very few of us have. Here are 9 easy ways to tune up your seductive aura and radiate that energy that seduces without you doing anything that doesn’t come naturally! 1. Look healthy and physically fit You dont have to be good looking by societys standards or even have rock-hard abs. Just having a healthy weight, skin, hair, teeth etc. is associated with someone with a healthy habits and a healthy inside as well. 2. Play up your uniqueness - People who are different are always intriguing: different outlook, talents, dress style, culture, religion, even speaking more than one language is appealing. 3. Be intellectually engrossing Many people are by nature curious and usually enjoy learning new things. Showing knowledge of a particular subject that the other person might be interested in is always appealing 3. Practice attentiveness - Carefully observe the other persons actions so as to gauge his or her likes and preferences, and act accordingly. True attentiveness requires disciplining of the mind as much disciplining the body. 4. Genuinely love the opposite sex- People who genuinely love the opposite sex enjoy them and are more naturally flirtatious. This makes spending time with them enjoyable. 5. Resist the urge for blatant displays of sexuality - Dignified restraint (verbal and physical) has a more seductive quality than the obvious all-out-there. A person who understands that there is a time and a place for everything is very appealing. 6. Be playful You can never go wrong with being really funny (not clownish), real witty and open minded. Balancing apparent planned cleverness with playfulness, and sometimes plain old silliness can be very seductive. Go as far as being physical (touch, nudge etc) in a respectable way. Touch is the most intimate and bonding of all senses. 7. Be real. You cannot fake an aura. It shows your true nature and intentions for everyone to see. And when your efforts are no more than an outcome simply of performance and habit, it leaves a bad feeling in the air. 8. Maximize the use of the moment no matter how fleeting - Nothing is to be hurried; nothing is to be forced. 9. But above all, a good heart underneath it all makes you infinitely more interesting than just the outer seductiveness you project. Now, go out there and seduce someone special!
